| About Australian Organic Hampers
T he Australian Organic Hamper Company Pty Ltd is a family business, owned and run by Australians.
Based in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, long famous as an Australian tourist icon and now also a World Heritage Area and Slow Food City, the company reflects the values of creativity, health and harmony with the environment. Loret has come from a background as naturopathic herbalist while John runs an organic gardening business. Both are active in local groups which promote organic, slow, local and sustainable food as well as organic gardening education and seed saving.
Amongst their other activities, they have become known locally for growing and selling heirloom fruit and vegetable seedlings which they offer at local markets . By growing and becoming familiar with an ancient variety, customers relish the opportunity to re-connect with the cultural and culinary heritage which has been passed down to them by generations of gardeners and farmers from around the world.
“Gifts are a way of saying something special to someone who is important to you - maintaining connections and coming closer together. Our aim is to provide our customers with choice from a superb range of certified organic gifts. What better than to give a gift of good taste and good health!”
Our product sourcing policy
Australian Organic Hampers spends a great deal of care and time in the selection of products which go into our gift hampers. As a result, our customers can be satisfied that they are purchasing authentic, quality gifts.
Our priority is to sell source products which are grown and processed in Australia and are certified by a recognised organic certifying agency. To become certified, a grower or processor must meet strict quality assurance standards and then be open to audit to ensure that the standards continue to be met. This can be tough for the growers and producers, but to us consumers of organic produce, this means that when we eat certified organic produce, we know that we are getting ‘the real thing’, quality a cut above the rest. This in turn protects the whole organic industry from exploitation by those more interested in making a quick dollar than in sustainable agriculture.
Occasionally we include products which are labelled as ‘certification in progress’ (or equivalent). This means that the grower or producer is committed to achieving organic certification, but has not yet received the final approval.
In addition we give priority to Australian goods. Not only does this mean that they are more sustainable than the organic goods that have travelled around the world (think of the carbon dioxide!) to get to you, but also that they support Australian farmers, businesses, their families and communities and ultimately the land of Australia and its agricultural resources.
When we do source an organic product from overseas we favour those which are certified as ‘Fair Trade’. As far as possible this ensures that our purchases do not adversely affect workers or the environment in poorer countries.
Lastly, and very occasionally, we do source certified organic products for which there is no Australian organic or Fairtrade supplier. We do this in the considered hope that through increasing consumer awareness, sufficient local demand can be created to encourage a local supplier to step up and fill the niche.
